What is How and Why?
How and Why is an age-appropriate sex education curriculum designed for children 9 and under. It gives kids accurate, honest answers to the questions they are already asking, in a way that feels safe, natural, and grounded in their stage of development. Rather than waiting until kids are older, How and Why meets them where they are, building a strong foundation of body literacy, healthy boundaries, and trust.

Our Approach
We believe children deserve honest answers. When kids grow up with accurate information and open conversations about their bodies, they are better equipped to recognize what is normal, set boundaries, and come to trusted adults when something feels wrong.

How and Why is not about rushing kids into topics they are not ready for. It is about giving them the right words, the right knowledge, and the confidence to use both. Every lesson is designed with their age and emotional development in mind, and nothing is taught that is not appropriate for where they are right now.

Got a Question? Ask Anonymously.

No question is too small, too silly, or too awkward. Whether you are a parent with something on your mind or a kid who is curious about something, you can drop your question in the box below and I will answer it, no names, no judgment.

For kids: If there is something you have been wondering about but felt weird asking out loud, this is for you. You can ask anything.
For adults: If you have a question about the curriculum, want to know how to handle a conversation at home, or are just curious about something, ask away.

Questions may be answered in class, on this page, or in a newsletter, depending on what makes the most sense. Personal or sensitive questions will always be handled with care and privacy in mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

Isn't my child too young for this?
Research consistently shows that early, age-appropriate sex education actually protects children. Kids who know the correct names for their body parts and understand personal boundaries are more likely to disclose abuse and less likely to be targeted by those who rely on children not having the words to describe what happened.

Will this go against what I teach at home?
How and Why is designed to support, not replace, conversations at home. We encourage parents to stay involved, ask their children what they are learning, and continue those conversations around their own family values.

Can I see what is being taught?
Yes. All curriculum materials are available for parents to review. If you have questions about specific content, please reach out and we are happy to walk through it with you.

What if my child asks questions I'm not ready for?
That is completely normal. How and Why actually helps with this because it gives children a shared vocabulary and framework, which often makes those conversations at home feel more natural and less intimidating.
